Changing routines can be difficult and complicated for many people: approaching new products, doing a lot of research without knowing what the skin is up against.
Information is the principle that makes the difference on one’s skincare routine of course, especially when approaching a new and almost unknown world. In this article, we will try to provide a guideline on how to move on buying natural products and the benefits your skin will get from them. Because taking care of both your skin and the environment is possible.
Environmental awareness in recent years (thankfully) has been growing more and more. People are paying more attention to ingredients, often preferring those of natural origin. Buying products with recyclable or compostable packaging.
Composing one’s skincare routine with natural products is no longer just a trend, but a conscious choice. What are the benefits?
Choosing natural products means giving up all those components that are harmful to skin and the environment and often used to maintain the integrity of the product over time, give it a soft texture and provide palliatives to the skin. We are talking about parabens, silicones and PEGs.
By law, every single component of a product formulation must be written in the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients), which is a list of ingredients on the back of the packaging.
- Parabens are compounds obtained from para-hydroxybenzonic acid, they have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, that’s why they are used as preservatives, thus they help the preservation of the product over time, preventing its alteration. However, they are harmful to the skin, so much so that their presence is detected in the blood, as they are able to penetrate body tissues and have a possible carcinogenic effect. Products based on natural substances, on the other hand, guarantee product preservation for 2 to 3 years and are not harmful to the skin in any way.
- Silicones are inorganic compounds not found in nature, and their job is to make the texture soft and give the skin a smooth appearance. However, their prolonged use over time creates an impermeable barrier that prevents the epidermis from transpiring.
- PEGs (Poly-Ethylene Glycols) are derived from petroleum and are used to achieve viscous textures and for their emollient properties, but again they are harmful and prevent, through the formation of a barrier, the absorption of nutrients.
In short, these are components that would be best avoided, whose benefits are only apparent and ephemeral. So why not familiarize yourself with a natural skincare routine, attentive to the true needs of the skin and the environment?
Green beauty, corresponds to nature and sustainability. It does not use animal-derived components and is cruelty-free (now European law). A lot of attention is paid to the manufacturing process and often the packaging is sustainable as well.
